Ubuntu 24.04 to 26.04.1 Upgrade Safe?

Hi Drakon,

Thanks for asking before upgrading.

We have not yet tested an in-place upgrade from Ubuntu 24.04 to 26.04 (do-release-upgrade) on a server that already runs Panelica, so we can't call it safe yet. Ubuntu 26.04 itself is supported: fresh installs on 26.04 are part of our regular test matrix.

The reason for caution: during installation Panelica sets up a few system packages that match the exact Ubuntu release, such as Python components and libraries whose package names change between releases. A fresh install on 26.04 picks the right ones for 26.04. An in-place upgrade does not add them, so some panel functions could stop working after the upgrade.

Our recommendation for now:

  • Safest path: install Panelica on a fresh Ubuntu 26.04 server and move your sites with the built-in migration tool, which can migrate from another Panelica server (files, databases and mail).
  • If you still want to upgrade in place: take a full backup first and, if your provider offers it, a snapshot of the server, so you can roll back if something goes wrong.

We will test the in-place upgrade path ourselves and post the results in this thread.
