Moved Mail From Plesk or cPanel? Stop Duplicate Sent/Trash Folders in Mail Clients

The symptom
After moving mailboxes from Plesk or cPanel, Outlook, Thunderbird or phone mail apps start creating INBOX.Sent, INBOX.Trash, INBOX.Drafts as sub-folders of the Inbox. Sent mail lands there, webmail shows a different Sent folder, and deleted duplicates come back on the next start.

The cause
Plesk and cPanel run Dovecot with the namespace prefix INBOX. - Sent is literally called INBOX.Sent there, and mail programs remember that name. Panelica (like most servers) uses no prefix, so the program does not find INBOX.Sent and creates it.

The fix in Panelica
Each mailbox has a switch: Plesk/cPanel mail program compatibility. When you turn it on:
  1. Every INBOX.* sub-folder is merged into the matching main folder (INBOX.Sent > Sent, INBOX.Invoices > Invoices, created if missing). Emptied sub-folders are removed. No message is deleted.
  2. A hidden alias is enabled for that mailbox: whenever a mail program asks for INBOX.Something, it gets Something.
  3. The mailbox keeps the spam folder it had on the old server (usually Spam); Junk is merged into it and spam filtering files there.
If something fails during the merge, the switch stays off and already-moved messages stay where they are.

Plesk and cPanel migrations in Panelica turn this on automatically for the mailboxes they bring over. For mailboxes copied another way (imapsync, manual rsync, restored backups), turn it on by hand:

Mail > Email Accounts > edit the mailbox > Protocol Settings > tick "Plesk/cPanel mail program compatibility" > Save.

Customers do not need to reconfigure their mail program. Ask them to restart it so it refreshes the folder list.

Why not for every mailbox?
On a mailbox that never lived on Plesk/cPanel, a real folder inside the Inbox (for example INBOX.Customers) would be hidden behind the alias. So it is per mailbox, only where it is needed.

Also fixed for all mailboxes
  • Folder roles (IMAP SPECIAL-USE) are now announced for the usual names, so clients stop creating "Sent Messages", "Deleted Messages" or "Junk E-mail" next to the real folders. Nothing is created and no existing folder is touched.
  • Phantom subscriptions from older versions (Thunderbird showed them as /Sent, /Trash) are removed automatically.
  • Mail moved from cPanel servers that stored it compressed opens normally.

Availability: panelica-server 1.0.546 and later; the current merge + alias behaviour from 1.0.551 (beta channel: Panel Settings > System Updates > Stable + Beta).
